The Importance of a Good Headshot

Everyone needs a headshot! At least ONE good one!

Headshots have come a long way. They don’t need to be the studio headshots that you are most likely used to seeing. You know what I’m talking about right??? Like those real estate agent ads you see on random flyers and street benches. Headshots nowadays can have a little personality. I don’t generally post the headshot sessions I get booked for, but I just wanted to take the time to show some examples. You can have a few different poses and angles and end up with an amazingly simple yet beautiful headshot that you would be proud to share with your colleagues and friends.

Headshots can be used for Facebook or Linked In. They can also be used for various usages at work.

Just take a look at some of the headshots I’ve recently taken. Isn’t it amazing how many different poses and angles you can have for a simple headshot? And I love how an outdoor/indoor background with some nice light can truly make a headshot unique and full of life!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

I can’t believe it’s 2011 already! I’m so looking forward to another year! I have a feeling this is going to be a very sweet year indeed.

Is it just me, but Southern California weather is funky lately. It’s been super cold and rainy the last few weeks, but I was lucky enough to photograph Miss S right after the rain had ended. The sunlight was perfect and beautiful! So light and purrtty!! We headed to the Claremont Colleges and just roamed around documenting Miss S having some fun with the leaves. It looks like it’s fall but it’s dead winter right now. You just gotta love Cali for that!

Check out the sweet photos of Miss S below. She’s super sweet, silly, and beautiful! The camera loves her and I had a blast shooting with her and capturing her beauty.

Dave Acosta | Jazz Saxophonist

I would love to introduce Dave Acosta – Jazz Saxophonist!! He is a very dear friend of mine. I have known him for several years now and he is one of the best Jazz Saxophonist ever!! He has played with some of the most famous Saxophonist in the world and has played in some of the hottest venues and worked some awesome events. He also teaches young kids how to play the saxophone and is great being patient with them. If anyone is interested in having a Jazz Saxophonist play at their wedding event, please feel free to contact Dave. He has such a passion for his music and his work. You will not regret hiring Dave for your wedding reception. He is AMAZING!!

I was so happy when he approached me to help him build his website and take some promotional photos for him. We headed to the streets of Pasadena to take some photos of him and his saxophone. It was a lot of fun and I think the photos really shows off Dave’s personality and his love for his music.

Alter Ego Photoshoot | Mr. Workaholic vs Mr. Funny/Nice Guy

There are two sides to every person…hey..sometimes there’s even more sides to a person. For those you who think you have to be engaged, pregnant, or a model to do a photo session…THINK AGAIN! Just come up with an unique idea and have fun with it! Who says you can’t do a solo portrait session and be “in character”. It’s another side of you that you can show to the world…or in this case..2 sides of you. For those of you who work a typical 9-6 job and feel like people perceive you as the workaholic…you will probably relate to this way more! We have all been through this at one point or another. All work and no play makes anyone down in the dumps. Sometimes you just want to burst out of that routine and feel alive. This is the thought process my friend Jono and I had when we came up with out little concept shoot. We just wanted to play with that theme a bit and yet show Jono’s versatility. He works hard and he plays even harder! Jono is a perfect example of this since he’s a Consultant by day and Mr. Funny/Nice guy the rest of the time. He’s so not the uptight typical Consultant. He’s actually super laid back and an easy going guy.

Jono and I had a blast roaming the streets of Downtown LA. It was a mini adventure looking for some cool spots that fit with what we were trying to achieve.

Here is the story of a man who is not a happy camper because he works all day when in actuality he has a different side to him when he’s not work. He’s more himself and more happy and relaxed. Thanks Jono and hope you had fun with our little photo play time!!

I’M BAAAAACCCCK!!

I just celebrated my 30th birthday in New York City last weekend and I had a blast! It was my 3rd time going to NYC and it never gets old. I simply love walking, using public transportation and not having to drive, and eating and not feeling bad because I’m walking it off all day! I got to watch Rock of Ages – the musical since I love musicals! It was Hao’s first time and I think I finally got him semi-hooked on musicals which is so sexy to me…hehe. He even watches Glee with me and it’s just too cute! We had so much fun and we enjoyed every minute of it!

So I came back earlier this week and have been super swamped with catching up on emails and taking care of some personal family responsibilities. So for those of you out there who have been emailing and calling me, PLEASE bear with me the next few weeks. I have tons of stuff on my plate at the moment and I’m trying to just get everything back to a normal pace I can handle. Unfortunately, I have a sick family member who I have been playing nurse with and it is taking up a lot of my time. But things are getting better but I am still adjusting to my new schedule and new responsibilities. So please bear with me. I promise to respond as soon as I can.

In other news, I did a very short mini session with my friend Mark who lives in NYC. He is a mutual friend of mine and this was our first time to finally meet in person. We have only been online friends over the past years. It was great to finally meet him. Unfortunately, since I was on vacation, I didn’t have enough time to do a full on session with him. So we headed to Central Park and Columbus Circle to do a quick portrait session. I love NYC and I seriously need to go back just to take photographs left and right. There is so much scenic areas to shoot at and tons of great light!!! I was really bummed I didn’t have enough time to shoot more.

So here is some of the photos from my portrait session with Mark! I truly believe everyone needs some good solo portrait shots of themselves at least once in their lifetimes. Seriously! The more the merrier in my book! Why not have some good shots of just yourself?!?! You can flaunt them on Facebook atleast right?! hehe

Off Camera Workshop

Last weekend, I decided to take an off-camera lighting workshop hosted by Ming Chien. I have been wanting to practice off camera lighting for a while. I love learning new techniques in order to just better myself and my skills. I’m glad that I got a chance to learn off-camera lighting more in depth. It definitely helped and I will be using my new skills in future photo sessions most likely. I love natural light and it will always be my first choice, but I can see the usefulness of off-camera lighting and how it can help in unique situations.

The workshop had some amazing models and stylists. We had the fabulous Carla Hille and Karla Montero who did the hair and makeup.

These models are not only sexy and hot, but they were all so friendly and sweet. They did an AMAZING job! It was great working with everyone and I hope to work with them in the future.

Fashion Shoot: Anthropologie Inspired | Fullerton, CA

Before I blog about my recent fashion shoot, I just wanted to give a heads up to everyone that I will be attending WPPI next week in Las Vegas!! I’ll be out of the office March 8-10. So if you email or call me, I may not be able to return your message until after I get back. I can’t wait for WPPI! This is my first time going to WPPI and I can’t wait to meet and greet thousands of other wedding/portrait photographers! I also can’t wait to party with them too! Expect a photo recap once I return!

I have been wanting to do a fashion shoot for some time now but no major opportunities have arrived that fit what I was really interested in. I’m so grateful for opportunities such as these because it allows me to take photos with no pressure whatsoever. I can just relax and shoot however I want and be freely creative. My goal for the day was to capture some “editorial style” type of photos. Things you would see in a fashion magazine per se. Along the way, I met some fantastic photographers and made some new photog friends By the way, they all rock because they are so sweet and funny and I love their style too!

Shooting for fun with Jen @ Cal Poly Pomona

The other day my dear friend Jennifer and I hung out. After the mall, some lunch, and some fun chit chat we ended up at my old college campus of Cal Poly Pomona. Man, I haven’t been here for years and the library looks WAY better and now there’s a real parking structure! Geez! I guess that’s where my money went. I wish i could have enjoyed these facilities when I was actually studying on campus. It would have been awesome!

In any case, Jen didn’t anticipate me doing a portrait session of her but it was fun for me to practice and just have some fun with my camera. Here are some of the fun shots I took of Jen and of the Japanese Garden on campus.
